1 Aug 2006 - Introducing the free BioMinT text mining service

Following the launch of the Gene and Protein Synonyms Database (GPSDB) early this year, PharmaDM now presents the main result from the BioMinT project: a free and easy to use information retrieval and extraction tool targetted at the online biomedical literature.

The BioMinT consortium was assembled in 2002 around a text mining project that was funded by the European commission. The main objective of this project was to develop a generic text mining tool which performs information retrieval and extraction from the biomedical literature. The underlying technological challenges included: the investigation of semantic content based information retrieval and extraction; customization of natural language processing techniques to biological texts; and application of relational data/text mining techniques. To live up to this challenge, a multi-disciplinary team of experts was composed.

Members of the consortium:

* University of Manchester (UK, co-ordinator)
* PharmaDM (Belgium)
* Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (Austria)
* Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (Switzerland)
* University of Antwerp (Belgium)
* University of Geneva AI Group (Switzerland)
