Introducing GPSDB, the free Gene and Protein Synonyms DataBase

(Leuven, Belgium) A little over one year after the original research paper was published in
Bioinformatics, PharmaDM is pleased to announce immediate availability of
its new GPSDB, the Gene and Protein Synonyms DataBase.

Already during the one-year test period, during which the database was
significantly refined, this new production-quality release of the online
thesaurus of gene and protein names has proved invaluable to biologists
worldwide.

Simple in concept, the online query tool aggregates information from over
a dozen biological source databases. A single query returns all synonyms
for a given name, conveniently grouped per semantic category. The user can
quickly evaluate which semantics are appropriate, then send all synonyms
to the familiar PubMed website in a single mouse click.

GPSDB is the first publicly available result from the three-year pan-European BioMinT project, which was funded in part by the European Commission.
The research was performed by Europe's leading biotech centers, including the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB) and Manchester University.
As a partner in the project, PharmaDM holds exploitation rights on the outcomes of the project.

PharmaDM lanceert GPSDB, de Gene and Protein Synonyms DataBase

(Leuven) Een jaar na de originele publicatie van een paper met de eerste onderzoeksresultaten in Bioinformatics, kondigt PharmaDM de publieke opening aan van de Gene and Protein Synonyms DataBase (GPSDB). De database is toegankelijk vanaf vandaag.

Reeds tijdens de testperiode van een jaar, waarin de database nog aanzienlijk verbeterd werd, werd duidelijk dat zo'n database een bijzonder waardevol hulpmiddel is voor biologen.

Het concept is eenvoudig: de database is een zorgvuldige samenvatting van infomatie uit meer dan een dozijn brondatabases uit alle hoeken van de microbiologie. Eén enkele query geeft de onderzoeker een overzicht van alle gekende synoniemen van een gen of eiwit, netjes gerangschikt per categorie. De gebruiker kan snel beslissen welke categorieën van toepassing zijn, en het lijstje met één enkele muisklik doorsturen naar de gekende PubMed website.

GPSDB is het eerste publiek beschikbare resultaat van het driejarig pan-Europese BioMinT project, dat deels door de Europese Commissie werd gefinancierd. Het onderzoek werd uitgevoerd door Europa's meest vooraanstaande biotech instellingen, onder andere het Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB, de uitgever van SwissProt) and de Universiteit van Manchester. Als enige commerciele deelnemer in het project heeft PharmaDM exploitatierechten op alle resultaten van het onderzoek.
